What is SCADA?

SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) is an automation remote monitoring and control system. As stated in its name, SCADA is applicable in any automation operation that requires supervisory control and real-time data acquisition. Whereby in this modern world, it is possible to use SCADA in any workplace/home, even though it was first introduced for industrial purpose. For example, one can implement a home automation or alarm system by using SCADA with IoT implementation.

SCADA System Architecture


Basically, SCADA represents the entire central system which includes / communicates with the following components:

Input/Output (IO) Devices

IO devices are mostly represented by instruments such as sensors, actuators or control devices. These devices are normally installed at field to collect signals and measurements. A simple example will be temperature transmitter, which act as a sensor to measure temperature values from where it’s installed. The direct signals from these IO devices can be either analogue or digital. Analogue IO normally refers to measurement instruments such as flow rate from flowmeter, pressure transmitter, weighing scale, valves, etc. On the other hand, digital IO could be flow meter’s pulses, device status, command bit, detector switches, and much more.

Remote Terminal Units (RTU)

RTU in a SCADA system plays the role to collect signals from field instruments and convert them to digital data. These digital data will then be sent to the supervisory system for data acquisition. Normally, RTUs are more suitable for wider area telemetry that uses wireless communications, as compared to PLC (Programmable Logic Controller).

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)

Similar to RTU, PLC will also be connected to field instruments to obtain real time signals, and then transfer them as digital data to supervisory system. PLCs are more popular among plants or fields which installed in a local area control plants, which is different from RTUs.

Communication network

Communication network is the essential link that connects everything together. This will include the connection between RTU/PLC and the supervisory system, which is required for the transportation of acquired digital data and control commands. The examples of these communication network media will be LAN (Local Area Network) or WAN (Wide Area Network).

Supervisory System

Supervisory system is the central system which receives and process the digital data from RTU/PLC for monitoring and data acquisition. It also acts as the brain to send out control commands to the process. A supervisory system normally will comprise of a database or data storage server, which will be used to log necessary data as well as retrieve them for reporting or other purposes. Human Machine Interface (HMI)

HMI is the front-end interface which is used by operators to interact with the supervisory system. These interactions include monitoring and controlling the automation processes. Basically, HMI screens shall consist of SCADA mimics, alarms, reports, and trends for analyzing the industrial processes. Most of the SCADA/HMI will be equipped with user authentication for security purpose, whereby different user role will have different access rights. For example, an operator may only monitor a treatment plant process, while a supervisor is allowed to start or stop the treatment process.
